If your car just failed a smog or emissions test in Sacramento, you do not have to fix it before donating. SacraCar Share, benefiting Heritage for the Blind, accepts vehicles that fail California smog tests. Whether you’re in Midtown, Elk Grove, Natomas, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, or anywhere in the Sacramento Metro, you can donate a failed-smog car as-is. We’ll arrange free towing, transfer the title properly, and you’ll receive a tax receipt—no repair bills, no dealing with buyers.
Here’s how it works in California: smog certification rules mainly apply to private sales between two individuals. A charitable donation is a title transfer to a nonprofit, not a normal retail sale, so that smog requirement generally does not apply the same way. Heritage for the Blind accepts vehicles in almost any condition, including those that fail emissions testing or can’t pass STAR station inspections. The vehicle is then sold as-is at auction or to a buyer who plans to repair or dismantle it. You do not need to pay for diagnostics, new catalytic converters, or a second smog check just to donate. We handle the logistics; you clear your driveway and support services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your failed-smog vehicle
Start online or by phone and share the basics: year, make, model, mileage, and that it recently failed a smog or emissions test in California. Whether it’s in Arden-Arcade, Folsom, West Sacramento, or South Sac, being honest about its condition helps us plan the right towing and paperwork.
2. Confirm your Sacramento pickup location and title
We’ll confirm where the car is parked—driveway, apartment lot, street parking near Midtown, Roseville, or Carmichael—and make sure you have the title. Even if it’s not currently registered because it failed smog, we can usually still proceed as long as you are the legal owner on the title.
3. Schedule free towing at a convenient time
You choose a pickup window that works for you. Our towing partner will meet you at home, work, or another safe spot in the Sacramento Metro. The tow is always free to you, even if the car won’t start, can’t pass smog, or has been sitting in the driveway for months.
4. Sign a simple title transfer and hand over the keys
At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to Heritage for the Blind via SacraCar Share. Because this is a charitable donation, not a private sale, the typical smog certification requirement doesn’t apply. Once the tow truck leaves, the car and smog problem are off your hands.
5. We sell the vehicle as-is and send your tax receipt
Heritage for the Blind sells the car as-is—often to a buyer who plans to repair the emissions issues or use parts. After it’s sold, you receive a tax receipt for at least $500, and if it sells for more, you’ll get the proper IRS Form 1098-C documentation for your deduction.
6. You’re done—no repairs, no retest, no buyer drama
You avoid paying for smog repairs or a second test, skip DMV headaches with potential buyers, and free up space at your Sacramento home. Your donation supports programs for people who are blind or visually impaired, with zero out-of-pocket cost to remove your failed-smog vehicle.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or incorrect title information
Tip: We generally need a clear California title in your name to accept the donation. If you’ve lost it, contact the DMV for a duplicate before scheduling pickup. An accurate, signed title keeps the transfer clean and makes sure future registration or smog issues don’t come back to you.
Existing DMV fees or non-op status
Tip: If your car failed smog and you stopped renewing registration, there may be back fees or a Planned Non-Operation (PNO) status. You can usually still donate, but those DMV issues stay with the vehicle history, not with you, once title is properly transferred to Heritage for the Blind.
Car not easily accessible for towing
Tip: If the vehicle is blocked in a tight alley in Midtown, up a steep driveway in El Dorado Hills, or stuck without keys, let us know upfront. We can often still arrange towing, but being clear about access helps avoid rescheduled pickups or extra time on the day of donation.
Joint owners or estate situations
Tip: If the title lists two owners, or the owner has passed away, we may need additional signatures or estate documents. Before scheduling, check whose names are on the title so we can guide you through any extra steps and keep the donation smooth and compliant with California rules.
